just an introduction I am from Lancashire England and retired
I am fairly used to the usual OS but Linux is baffling to me I hope to learn alot from this forum. I have only been viewing for a short while and have aready learned some important facts
It is a briiant resource and i feel sure one could hardly stop learning the size of the site
I'm quite new to Linux/BSDs as well. There are lots of online tutorials, you can probably find some by searching this site. I have a book that I'm quite fond of for beginners, I've found it very handy, but that can depend on where your starting from. If you've been sys admins for years it may be too basic. "Visual Quickstart Unix third edition", although there is a brand new 4 edition out now that I think I'll pick up soon.
If you really want to learn about Linux, try Slackware. You'll spend some time tearing your hear out and do lots of reading READMEs and asking question, but you'll be rewarded with a stable, fast OS that is nigh-bullet-proof.
If you just want to run Linux, go with Ubuntu or one of the 'easier' distros: You won't learn as much, but the frustration level is much lower.

i have tried to open an .EXE without succes so downloaded synaptic but can,t make any sense of it. I seem to be lacking the most basic skills
I think I need a simple guide by numbers without linux jargen
for instance I have synaptic downloaded and extracted Ithink.
But I cant seem to do anything with it.
i believe i should get wine but how are the two linked? and is there a best version number to download?
What do you want to install : what is the .exe? You are correct to say that you need wine to run a Windows program. Wine allows you to install some (quite a lot) of Windows software on a Linux box without problems. It might be that there is a Linux alternative to the .exe. So......name your software
I also have an Acer Aspire netbook (an AOA 110) but I removed the default Linux without hesitation. I installed Ubuntu and everything just works. Stureedy's suggestion also makes sense but a lot more effort is involved. Everything will work!
