I have just about had it with Window$. I now intend to install Ubuntu sometime soon. I may be calling back for some assistance if I run into any difficulty.
As a long time computer user, since 1966 on mainframes to date on PC's, I have seen many changes over time. I used to run a dual boot system with my old W98SE system. However, having upgraded I ran into difficulty with attempting to install a very early version of Ubuntu. Now the time has come to revisit the situation and just bite the bullet and get on with it.
This Forum appeals to me so hopefully I will be dipping in quite often from now on.
Hi and welcome to LQ HH, I think you will find the distros well advanced in the past few years. Hope you enjoy the new experience.

Hi Larry
Thanks for the kind words.
I have just done a full backup of my Windows system. Now I can't decide whether to install Ubuntu 9.04 as a dual boot system or to cut my losses and go for broke with Linux all the way. If all else fails I still have my Laptop for emergencies otherwise I can just do a restore of the Windows backup.
My only doubts are with the wireless network which I use for my laptop to surf the Internet. I'm not so clued up in that direction. I normally call on my son in law who is a network engineer but he is not up with Linux.

Hi Larry
This is just to let you know that I have now installed Ubuntu 9.04 as a dual boot with Windows XP. All is fine so far and all is working OK. I am still going through testing everything but so far no problems. This posting is coming via Linux Ubuntu.
Glad it worked out for you,I hope you enjoy and have a great experience. Linux has a way of growing on you. There is nothing wrong with dual booting, a lot of us have windows stuck somewhere on the hard drive.
I have been using several different distos over the last 2 years. I loaded lgamer (based on Ubuntu) and love it. I dual boot with Windows XP. I can't get Office 2003 to work with wine, but I am trying to get away from Windows completely.
I'm enjoying this Ubuntu Linux 9.04. I am hoping to get completely away from Windows but for the moment there are a few bits and pieces I still need from Windows. One thing that stands out is how fast it runs especially with booting up and shutting down. Windows can take anything up to 15 - 25 minutes to boot up on a bad day and shut down (without updates running) in 5 - 15 minutes as well. Booting up and shutting down in Ubuntu Linux can be measured in seconds by comparison.
I haven't yet looked into this program called "Wine" to run the few Windows programs that I still need at present. I need to read up on it as it is all still new to me.
Once I get all this working well, I may also consider switching to Linux on my Laptop too. The problem is that I have a small HDD and that's quite full even though I have moved a lot of stuff over to an external HDD. I also need to get a better understanding of wireless networks because at the moment I run my laptop via a Belkin Wireless Router. This was configured for me by my son in law who is a network engineer with IBM, but he says he doesn't know much about Linux. I'm sure that this is something I can work on myself in time.
Thanks again for you kind words, it's appreciated.

I have used Open Office in both Windows and in Linux. I can assure you that I have had no problem reading and writing Office 2003 files. Since installing Ubuntu Linux I have managed to navigate to the windows partition and worked on windows Office 2003 files using Open Office without any difficulty. Why not give it a try.
Good luck
Regards

Thanks Hampshire Hog, I like Open Office. I want to master the challenge of getting MS Office 2003 to work with WINE. Just a personal thing, but I think it is futile. If I can get Office 2003 to work I am sure I can get anything to work. I am a big user of Poser and I got that to work with WINE without any problems; and poser is a real memory hog!

You might consider using a virtual machine, there are a couple of programs that will not seem to work under wine or are so crippled that operator gives up on them.
