what to do if liveCD installer installs distro with wrong resolution

I installed MEPIS 8 earlier this week, but for some reason, the resolution came out wrong. My monitor can do 1680x1050 and I normally use 1024x768, but the newly installed version offered nothing better than 800x600. It may have had something to do with my running the liveCD in VESA mode, which I always do because my chipset has some problem that prevents MEPIS and some other distros from running X with default video.
Anyway, I just fixed it. What I did was to run the MEPIS 8 liveCD again, go to the MEPIS X-Windows Assistant, and copy the currently running X configuration to the hard drive installation.

probably your graphic card driver is not installed. what graphic card do you use? Nvidia / ATI or Intel?

It's Nvidia, but the thing is, I never did anything to install it before, and didn't have this problem.
