Hi,
I had a spare machine and had installed Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty?), was using this machine as a file server with Windows XP clients accessing shared folders.
It was all OK until I upgraded to Hardy (8.04) and the shared folders were no longer accessible from windows clients. I had a video downloaded about setting up SAMBA. Going through the same gave me the clue that one of the menu option that was there in Feisty is missing in hardy. That is, System/Administartion/Shared folders.
A google search took me through various solutions and the one that gave me instant solution is the command
shares-admin from the page
http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2008/07/...-shares-admin/. This command brought me the same screen that used to come when the menu option mentioned above was used.
Once the shares were again made, everything started working all right. It is quite obvious I am too novice when it comes to Linux and I thought this may help someone like myself save time otherwise he would spend searching google and doing trial and error with various solutions.
Thanks.
