Syslog and iptables, output going to console

I turned on kernel logging of packets using "LOG" with iptables. The output would be logged to the file I specified in syslog.conf but it was also going to the console. While searching for the answer noticed other people were having the same problem. Set level to debug, it will keep the messages in the logs but off the console.

There are two other things to look at as well..
in /etc/syslog.conf, look for an entry /dev/console
RedHat and like often have.. kern.* /dev/console

Adjust that to kern.notice which limits the output to notice or worse, or comment it out..
notice has a loglevel of 5
info has a loglevel of 6
debug has a loglevel of 7
(the lower the number, the more important is the message.)

2nd, there is a default console logging level setting at boot
which can be read from /etc/sysconfig/init, usu LOGLEVEL=3
or in Debian, /etc/init.d/functions, LOGLEVEL=1

More details from man syslog.conf or this Linux Journal article www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=5476
