This will probably not be very informative, but I am so thrilled at the moment that I'll post it anyway.
I bought an IBM Thinkpad R51* after a lot of searching because it seemed that it would be relatively Linux compatible (plus it came with no OS, so no "tax")
Installation of Slack 9.1 (after I used Knoppix to see what was inside) went without a hitch but LQ and Google showed that in order to get the most out of the centrino and wifi bits etc I would need to update.
I used the machine to get Slack 10, and was happy that I could see CPU temp etc but I was going nuts knowing that the machine had wifi but the Sourceforge projects need a 2.6.x kernel.
The muse was calling so I plunged head-first into the world of make mrproper, make bzImage and..... well you know the rest
I think it is ready to connect without wires, hardware graphics acceleration is working, CD-burner is cooking, ACPI is doing it's thing, GUI (Gnome) at 1024x768 looks great.
Tomorrow i will head off to a hotspot and see if I can make my first wireless post!
Thanks for reading,
PS: If any other Thinkpad users would like to see lsmod, lspci, or my .config etc please feel free to e-mail me
