Linux Apprectiation

I was working on a family members computer this weeked. They have winXP. The one that I bought them before I switched over to linux. They have all the latest safety software, which seems useless with the security problems of XP. Now I am far from an expert with any ms win os. But I do know how to clean it up and trouble shoot it. People usually come to me for help and I always get things back to the way they where. Though sometimes I have to re-install the whole damn thing.

Well anyways with this computer I couldn't believe how much spyware was on it. I went into the registry and clean it up. I found a lot of programs that just installed themselves on this computer without anyones approval. One of them was from gain publishing company...gain, not gaim. Not to mention all these other ones, some of which I never even heard of. It took me some hours to completely clean it up. Then when I ran programs like ad-aware, spybot and so on, it still found spyware. six or more hours to get things running again. I couldn't just re-install it because this is a personal and bussiness computer. They have dsl and it was so bad that they could be playing soltaire on their computer and they would get attakced with so many pop up windows it would freeze the computer.

Well to make this a little shorter it works fine, for now. But I installed Mandrake 10.0 on it and the only draw back that I had was that they have an all in one lexmark printer/scanner/etc. Everything works except the scanner, which is not supported. They love Linux but it will take some time to get use to it.

Now I bought XP for them earlier this year. I installed it shortly afterwards. I know what I am doing and I know the right anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc. prgrams to install. I installed them. I know this computer. It was locked up tightly. But it still got messed up. I had bought four seperate XP's and installed it on four computers, two of them where mine. Now I have XP as my second os for games only. I think others will follow suit when they realize what I did....
I had dsl in my old apartment. I had my computer connected and on for weeks at a time with linux. No fire wall, no anti-spyware programs, no anti-virus programs. I never had a single problem. AT ALL! Now granted I understand that there are some security risks that pop up. I also understand it is just common sense to have a firewall and anti-virus software. But my point is this. If I had done this with XP or any other micorsoft product it would have taken a matter of hours before something infected my computer. a matter of days, or less, before it was unusable. Not to mention the fact that I have never been able to keep ms Windows on for long periods without it acting buggy.

So above is the long winded way of saying this: "Linux kicks a** and microsoft is what comes out of A**es."

Edit:
I just realized I may have put this in the wrong forum, lol.
