How to install ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 driver on Mandrake 9.0

Hi all,

since I struggled almost 2 weeks solving this problem, I think I will do some people a favor explaining the driver installation of the ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 on my laptop.
Mandrake 9.1 and RedHat 9 should be able to recognize this card because these systems use XFree86 4.3.0 which include the newest ATI drivers, incl. Mobility.

So, my laptop (dell inspiron 8200) runs on Mandrake 9.0 and uses XFree 4.2.1.
I tried installing XFree86 4.3.0, but it kept on failing and I was unable to start X. I was also not very eager to install mandrake 9.1...

Solution:

- download linux drivers from ATI.com (http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver...e&cmdNext=Next) for Radeon cards. They say that it's not for the Mobility (laptop) cards, but it works nevertheless.
- install the drivers rpm using "rpm -ivh --nodeps --force glrx-glc22-4.2.0-2.5.1.i586.rpm"
- if you don't force the rpm install, it will quit prematurely because of some conflicts...
- this install WILL give some warnings and errors, but installs the drivers properly
- then it's time to write a new XF86Config file using "fglrxconfig" and use the settings given on this site (http://www.guezz.net/dell.html) for a Dell i8200 laptop. This should work for other laptops if you are aware of every technical specification of your machine
- be aware that this driver only works for a resolution 1600x1200! The driver is not specific for the Mobility and we are all waiting for a real driver.

As I stated above, Mandrake 9.1 should recognize the card pretty well.
These instructions are for Mandrake 9.0.

cheers,

Josh.
