I had to read through countless websites and thread here at LinuxQuestions.org, but I finally got my ipod video to mount and transfer songs.
Here are the steps I take to mount and use my ipod. As root:
# modprobe usb-storage
# modprobe sbp2
(after I realized I needed these commands, I added usb-storage and sbp2 to the list in /etc/modules so that they execute at start up)
# mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/ipod
/dev/sda2 because this is where most Windows partitioned things mount (finally found that on a website, was trying sda3 and it never worked) and /mnt/ipod is a drectory I made a root to mount to, it could be whatever you want)
then it is mounted...then launch gtkpod as root and tranfer my songs
You can opt to have gtkpod to take care of mounting/unmounting, but it wasn't working.
If you unmount, and the ipod doesn't say that you can disconnect, I use:
# umount /mnt/ipod
# eject /dev/sda2
Cool. I never had a problem with gtkpod mounting/umounting my iPod for me, I don't use it now though, I just use a desklet I have running to manage that part of it

Just looking at the headline, I assumed for a second you had somehow succeeded in installing Debian on your iPod. Silly me - though it would have been impressive were it true.
Thanks much raeanne, I too searched around and had trouble getting the ipod mounted. I followed your advice and my stepson can now use his ipod on the linux box I set up for him.
