W00tus McGee hits the scene!

Good day everyone!

Forewarning.. I'm super new to Linux. I'm an Uber Noob. I'm also goofy. And a windbag, which will probably become apparent shortly..

I've known about Linux since I was a boy, however, for lazy reasons, I never looked into it that much. I was a Windows guy. I did computer repair to supplement my income for a long time and didn't have any reason to move away from Microsoft.

Then Windows 8 came around. Then Windows 10... Around that time, I found things that made way better money than fixing laptops for $50 a pop and having to spend half of that in gas trying to track people down to get paid. Finally the cycle was broken and I was free to use whatever OS I wanted.

I typed "linux download" into the googles and downloaded the first one I saw, which was Mint. I liked it just fine. Then google told me that Solydxk was the most stable distro on the planet, so I started installing it on work computers and my mom's computer who also was less than ecstatic about the new Windows 10 craze and all of the issues she had with scams and virus' over the years. It was then that I discovered that Linux distributions are sort of like vampire lineage. You've got the Kernel, made by Sir Linus, that's like Cain. Then you have Cain's children; Debian, Slackware and Red Hat. They had their own children; Mint, Fedora, etc.. Each generation away from Cain having their own magical powers, forming clans and camarillas and such but all answering the call of the repositories. No idea if that's the actual lineage, but I was having flashbacks of VTM the whole time I was looking through a list of what was available the first time.

From there, I got to the point I'm at now. Bumbling around the internets looking for new (to me) and exciting Linux distros to try out. I've decided to stick with the Debian clan for the time being. The only reason for that is that I figured out how to install a deb package first. There is literally no other reason, in case you're reading this and may have a suggestion for me at some point.

Fortunately, I started my computing "career" before the mouse or even the gopher net existed. From this, I gained a few things that I think will be helpful - I'm comfortable with a command line, I know nearly every windows key command in existence (am happy to see many of them translate) and I have an affinity for monochrome screens. Additionally, I was too broke to pay attention growing up, so I had to learn how to build and fix my own stuff. I can now build just about anything I need via dumpster diving. I'm thankful for this now that I'm older. This last acquired skill set has really came in handy with the pilgrimage to a new Kernel.

Ok.. I've gone on long enough I think. I'm super stoked to pick your brains! I'm going to sit for a bit and think about what question I want to ask first. I've got tons.. But I don't want to wear out my welcome.

Hi w00tus and welcome to LQ! :)

My suggestion is MINT-DE if you haven't tried that as yet.

Downloading the ISO in Deluge as I type. :D

Just ordered some new hardware for work that I think is really going to be a lot of fun with testing new Distros. Got me an 850 pro, a usb 3.1 gen 1 type c enclosure for it and a cool little powered my linux sticker (because I love to blow money apparently) to put on it.

I think I'm going to end up keeping my main OS that I use for work on it after a few weeks of playing around. Once the new Thread Ripper hits the market (I've been waiting to upgrade since AMD first announced "Zen," I'm working with an OC'd FX-9590 which does just fine really), I'll be sure to pick a MB that has a 3.1c and plenty of highway to open her up. I have to keep it on me for a multitude of reasons. The handful that are on display now have that.

Just hope that the newest Kernel will work..

Greetings :).

Well, I've settled on a few distros until I manage to make my way through Linux From Scratch. I really like Debian for anything I can put it on, Lubuntu for ancient hardware, Kali for maintenance work and xfce for myself and KDE for anyone I'm trying to get on board my ship departing from Microsoft. Mint-DE was cool though! :D

(my belated) Welcome to LQ!!!
I remember enjoying seeing your long post 6mo ago!!!
(I'm frustrated when 1st-posters don't say anything about PC, Linux goals/interests/...)

I just saw your new Thread, but was overwhelmed when it appeared to ask/say:
... each of the server things Linux can do (&more; I don't Pi, yet anyway).
LQ seems to have more of a specific Q&A format.
(I once got scolded for posting: "A couple things I'd like to do". Ouch!!!)
But this Intro forum seems to allow a bit of 'chat', so maybe we can 'talk about it' here.
(Intro doesn't show up on "View Latest Posts" tho it does on LQspy, sorry LQspies;))

How about a book on Linux, like "Linux Bible", or many online .pdf ?
(do you like reading eBooks online???) Pi books too...

One technicality: when you replied to your (own) post,
you knocked it off of 'ZRT' visibility :(

Edit append (this AM, since you haven't been back yet, per clicking on username):
I see you got some guidance in 'that new Thread'. Yes, 'take it slow',
as 'they' say (as in 'dating'). The LFS ambition would be 'huge' for me
(and I've done Unix server admin basics dozens of years ago!!!)
So, don't 'overeat' at the Linux 'buffet', and end up 'regurgitating' Linux:D

OT (=don't respond to this comment) p.s. 2018 'won't be the same',
Without @ardvark@LQ; peace be with you, ardvark'71. real tears.
