pismo debian rookie here
Hi all. I just installed Debian on my old Powerbook G3/500 Firewire (Pismo), planning to use it as a dedicated software development box (I'll use my newer Mac for media) and it's a lot of fun now that I know a little more of what I'm doing. Haven't installed X yet - I'm rather enjoying text mode, especially web surfing in lynx.
I'll search for the answers to these, and my linux pocket guide is arriving soon from Amazon, but the issues I'm trying to resolve at the moment (the same ones everyone is I'm sure):
1) configuring iwconfig correctly (Airport card) - particularly difficult because the powerbook that configures the base station is in the shop. Is there anything equivalent to OS X's Airport Admin utility for Linux? Something that will let me log into the network using a text password as opposed to the hex network key?
2) configuring X correctly (at some point - text is lots of fun). I tried via tasksel, but it didn't like my settings.
3) connecting to the Rendevous USB printer connected to the Airport base station. This is probably a tricky one. Again, I'll wait for the Pocket guide, since I know nothing about CUPS yet either.
4) setting up emacs to work well with tcl and apache rivet. This one's pretty easy.
After that, I'll be quite content. Glad to be aboard.
Cheers.
- Jake
