Hi. I just purchased a new HP laptop and am waiting for it to be delivered to my house so that I may get rid of Vista and start life anew as a Linux user. I am not sure how to begin, but this forum seems like a good place to start.

I bet there was time when you didn't know how to start with Vista, did you?
