newbie intro

Hi All,

Just a hello to those more in the know about Linux than myself - and I'd reckon that's about 99.9999% of the inhabitants of this forum

Anyway, I'm a Windows user through and through and have installed Redhat v9 on a crusty old AMD/266, 512M of memory and a 6G HDD. It's main purpose is intended to be proxy server (Squid), email distribution, filtering and virus scanning (package/s unknown just yet) as well as, hopefully, web content filtering.

The web content filtering is the last on the list of my 'wants' but important given my 5 year old son is soon to wander onto one of the PCs at home and I'd dearly prefer he not be inundated with a mass of porn banners. No idea on the package to use either.

Anyways, I've got Webmin/Usermin going as well as TightVNC and SSH so at least I've figured out how to install an RPM package

Cheers to All from Australia

Howdy and welcome to LQ.

As for virus scanning I recently installed clamav and it's on patrol on the mail server. Seems happy so far.

Thanks mcleodnine for the suggestion on clamav - i've d/l'd a copy to prompt my memory when I begin my journey on the mail server installation.

I've got Squid working at least and it's significantly better than any of the Windows proxy servers I've used in the past.

Cheers
