New to the Forum. Trying to convert. Need help with User setup
 

Hello! Thank you for reading my post. This will be my first of many. I'm not completely new to linux but my true strengths lie in windows. I have installed a number of distros (mandrake, SuSE, Red Hat, Fedora 5, Slack) but have not been satistfied until I found Slack which has given me the challenge I have been looking for. I am trying to develop skills related to the administration of linux (ie. User rights and permissions, software installs (I can't figure out how to compile a software package), adding hardware (wireless), and Linux equivalent software to windows) and work from command line as much as possible. I know that I have listed alot different topics and I need to learn to read the man on most things and use the search button.

My main concern right now is to find out what is a common setup for regular user. So for everyday web surfing and appication use what type of user permissions should I give myself or someone else. I'm certain that there are many threads on this, but if you could just point me in the right direction with a link or Keywords to use when searching it would be greatly appreciated.

The defaults, when it comes to permissions, usually work quite well. When you create a normal user account, the user will be able to read/write his/her home directory, but not other users'. Will be able to run programs, but not to write to system directories.

If you have special requirements, it may require some tweaking.
