New OpenSuse 10.3 user
I would like to introduce myself to all you fine men and women her at LQ.
I work for Army Airforce Exchange Service in Dallas, Texas in the network support department. We support all our networks around the world as well as the POS systems at all the exchange stores. It's an exciting job and I love it, we get the opportunity to work with all types of technology both old and new (We still have legacy mainframe systems).
Recently, our POS department decided to upgrade all the stores POS system to SUSE Linux (not sure if it is SUSE or OpenSuse). I decided to download OpenSuse 10.3 and load it on an old unused IBM laptop that I had available.
I ran into installation problems when I first loaded the OpenSuse but with persistence I finally got it to loaded. I had problems with YaST2 deleting the old Windows partition and creating new Linux partition. I found on this site good step by step help on how to do that with Fdisk and finally got the OS to load.
OpenSuse 10.3 is great! I love it, its fully documented and has all kinds of applications available. After experiencing this who would ever pay for Windows OS and Office suite (I did before)?
My goal with OpenSuse is to learn the file structure, learn the KDE window interface, and be able to use the terminal side more so I know which directory to find applications and drivers. I hope to be able to make myself more marketable here at my company and at other retail companies incase I find myself looking else where.
That is my spill
