n00b to the Nth degree

Hey all. As usual when I join a forum, I've been lurking around a few threads, including the screenshot thread. Wow, I've always wanted a cool looking desktop, much different from my generic Windows XP desktop. As I'm typing this, I'm downloading Knoppix. I've always been interested in exploring Linux, and now that I got a new Sony VAIO desktop, I'm going to try my hand at Knoppix. Any tips? A friend told me I would have to change something in my BIOS to "boot to CD". Heh, I have no clue how to do that.
