Linux Geek Wanna-Be

So, I need to learn Linux in order to reduce hardware costs for my company. We've been doing National Instruments hardware using LabVIEW as the programming language. I think I may have convinced my superiors to let me do a Diamond Systems Linux approach, using C as the programming language. This will move us much closer to a product, I think. So I need to learn the standard Linux cli tools, because there's no GUI in a Diamond Systems sbc. I'll need vi, sed, awk, grep, etc, as well as sys-admin tools and of course the C compiler. Sounds like fun, right?

I use Debian 6.0.4 in a dual-boot laptop with Win XP, I have another laptop with straight Ubuntu 12.04, and I have a Slackware 13.37 desktop machine with 128MB of RAM that I think I'll have to upgrade to 14, because of the package manager (slackpkg) issues. I signed up to LQ mainly because of the Slackware box, which I have for two reasons: 1. It appears to be the only distro I can install on the thing, and 2. I want to learn Linux.

Thank you for letting me sign up for LQ!
