Smile Immersed in CentOS

Hello all, although I've played with different versions of linux for a few years, I've immersed myself in CentOS for the past 6 months. After 18 years as a Windows IT professional I consider myself converted. This is a great forum. Thanks for being here!

just keep in mind that CentOS ( or what i use ScientificLinux6.6) is not the best choice for a home general purpose computer for daily use .

for that is use OpenSUSE 13.2

Cent/RHEL/SL are GREAT for the office /laboratory/server or for the software that WAS DESIGNED !!! for rhel
( i run scientific software - ISIS3(usgs /nasa) and ASP(jpl/nasa) )

I appreciate your comment John and I found that out the hard way. Since that lesson was learned, my involvement with CentOS has been in the workplace specifically as a Red Had substitute for the creation of virtual appliances using vSphere 5.5 and of course the vCenter Virtual Appliance.

For home use I have been recommending Ubuntu for those that are tired of replacing their equipment every two years for the next iteration of Windows. I have that as a virtual machine as well and if I didn't need the Windows operating system for at work networking, I would use Linux distros exclusively.

Care to mention what some of the issues were? I ask because I've been using CentOS (or, for a while, Scientific Linux) as my regular desktop OS for quite a few years. Now you've got me wondering what I'm missing.

Hi rknichols, well... my preferred browser is Firefox and when I was using CentOS at home, the browser version was not up to date which prevented things like flash from installing correctly. A favorite weekend activity is to watch/listen to music videos on youtube while friends and family hang out. I just couldn't seem to get that working. I learned later that I may have tried to use Chromium instead of Firefox but I had already stopped using CentOS at home by then.

OK. I haven't seen any problem running Firefox ESR 31.6.0 (as supplied by CentOS 6) and flash-plugin-11.2.202.457 from Adobe. When something won't play, it's generally because of some combination of the NoScript, Flashblock, and Adblock Plus extensions that I have installed.
