Howdy Y'all
I am rather new to the world of Linux. One of my sons first encountered it in college in the early '90s and has been very pleased with it ever since. He got his current job in security administration based in good part on his knowledge of Linux.
Nothing in this posting is a request for help. I'll submit my problems on the appropriate forums over the course of time as I feel ready to handle solutions. As you can see from my biographic information, I'm a retired Univac mainframe programmer living in southern California (USA). My uses of the computer include Internet applications (85%), office application (10%), strategy games like Civilization Call to Power (4%), and other misc. games (1%). My office application is OpenOffice.org. My Internet applications are the Opera web browser, the Pegasus Mail mail client, and the POPFile mail classification tool with which I've participated in the preliminary testing of its future IMAP service. Though I've wanted to listen to some web radio, I've been unable to. Formerly I was running on a slow (233MHz) system running Windows but it had a sound card that never worked from the time the computer was brand new. I'm now running on an AMD 2600+ system running Linux. One of the web radio sites says that it requires Microsoft Windows Media Player while another says that it required Real Player. A few months ago I started the replacement of my old slow computer running Win98 with a new computer running the SuSE 9.0 Pro distro with the KDE 3.1 GUI (I hope I said that right.). I installed the distro on the new system and verified that it would run performing trivial tasks. Sound worked after this hardware and OS upgrade. After about a month I added the hard drives from my old system to the new one and attempted to set the system up as a dual boot configuration. Probably as a result of hardware changes I was never able to get the Win98 system to successfully boot so I run my primary Windows application, Pegasus Mail, using Wine. Initially I experienced a lot of error messages in the Wine window. As a result, I upgraded to the SuSE 9.1 Pro distro with the KDE 3.2 GUI. I got rid of most of those error messages but now I have trouble with the permissions being ignored on the vfat partitions after some time of activity denying me permission to write to these partitions. The only sounds I get since the OS upgrade are faint buzzes. Anyway, I'm looking forward to talking to you folks on the other forums on this site and to enjoying my use of Linux. |
Welcome to LQ, Jim. If/when you have questions, post them and chances are the someone in the LQ membership should be able to point you in the right direction. Welcome aboard -- J.W.

Hi,
I am not quite a linux newbie myself - but a newbie to the list - and just been browsing a bit through the intros - obviously. and i jsut stumbeld about your vfat-permission problem, which has a simple solution (if that's what i think is the problem): just add umask=GID (where GID is your appropriate GID) into your etc/fstab ... simple isn't it :D should somehow look like this: /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-15,umask=501 0 0 |
I'm not sure the problem is what you say but I'll probably try your fix anyway.
Just to restate the problem, My Windows application running under Wine starts off just fine but after a period of time it reports that it is out of disk space (a bogus report) and quits. When I try to delete a file on the vfat partition that it was using I am told that such is not permitted. The partition is mounted rw and my permissions for the file inclued read, write, and execute. -- Jim |
