Wink Hi! I'm a windows user trying Linux. I bought a cheap computer and installed Linux

I'm retired from 30 years as a law enforcement officer. I've always used windows, currently windows 7. I bought a cheap computer (refurbished) to try Linux. Right now I'm learning Linus Mint, and will soon try Fedora. I believe I will soon say goodbye to windows.

Howdy and Welcome. I just picked up 2 Dell T3400 Towers and 1 IBM Think Centre E50 that were heading to the land fill from City Hall.

Have fun learning Linux. I know I do.

Welcome to LQ.

My first Linux computer was an IBM PC 300--that's one of the original Pentiums--with, I think, 328 MB RAM, that someone gave to me in 2005. It had been surplussed from Princeton Univ., where his wife worked.

Hi & welcome to the world of Linux.

You will find this a good place to gain knowledge. The best advice is not to be embarrassed to ask. As long as you back up your question with a bit of background someone should be able to help out.

Mint is considered one of the best "newbie friendly" distros so you made a good choice. You should soon find yourself doing all the things you did on windows. I have found that a good way to try out new distros is to grab a "live" version. This enables you to run the distro from DVD and get a feel for how it works without having to go through the installation process.

Cheers
