Hello! My names Justin, I'm new to the forums, I had a question about something regarding Apache/Linux that I've never done before, and so I thought id as here, and figured why not introduce myself while I'm at it!
Short and sweet story about me:
Started making HTML websites when I was a kid
Wanted to accomplish somthing that I couldnt do in HTML/CSS/JS, so I did my first line of PHP, and it blew me away (Hey, I was a kid, easy to impress)
Started creating crappy websites for friends, and kept thinking "If only I could learn how that Linux thing works, and how to host websites, thats where the real moneys at"
A buddy of mine pointed out that CentOS/Apache/Linux/PHP/MySQL are all free and open source, and blew me away... again
Stopped making websites, started playing with Linux
(At this point, im about 18~19 years old) I wanted to get a job as a Linux admin, realized I couldnt get a job without experience, and couldnt get experience without a job, was trying to find out how to bust out of this catch-22
Decided to start my own "Hosting Company", rented some servers from Soft Layer and The Planet (Before they were the same company), and started my own company, not with the goal to make money, but just to learn, (Started amphosted.com)
Started working at a web hosting company doing tech support for a measly $34k/yr.... supporting WIndows/ColdFusion/ASP.NET (lol, I know, I was "the linux guy over there")
Got my first "Real" Linux gig at a company called Jawa, which asked me to sell AmpHosted, and I gadly did so, for a GREAT opportunity
Started at Jawa thinking I was going to suck, not having any other Linux admin to compare myself against, so I had confidence issues, so I opted to start in the lowest position
Within a month, I was promoted to lead in the NOC, and helping manage the team (ironically, they all had 3 ~ 5 years experience) - My experience with scripting in Perl and PHP and all the other experience from AmpHosted really helped
Got promoted out of the NOC another month later, and put into an Admin role
After a year, Jawa got sued by Verizon and out out of business - everyone got laid off
Got a new job at LifeLock as a Linux Infrastructure Engineer II, doing work I never really dreamed id get to do in my first couple years as a real Linux Admin/Engineer
Kept getting promoted for my awesome work, 4 years in, I started to get too cocky and started to show up whenever I wanted, turned down whatever work I didnt want to do, got let go (learned my lesson)
Got hired at PayPal in the InfoSec department, my first 6 figure salary (well into six figures actually), Thought it would be awesome, but I hated working in such a corporate environment, so that didnt work out, lasted 6 months
Got a new job at a startup company, paying more than PayPal, in a position that seems like it was BUILT for me, i love the work, company is awesome, people are awesome, pay is great, location is perfect, all in all... working out great!
Annnnd.... thats all
Well, that about sums up my work history!
