Wink hi friends...i'm a neophyte in the Linux environment!!!!!!


hi i'm myself Sandeep...from kerala, india....i'm an engineering student in computer science...i'm doing my project in linux...i chose linux basically to get aquainted with this os...now i have started loving it...so thought of joining a linux forum which can improve my knowledge base in linux....i wanna know the basics about linux...like how can i install the new packages in linux....i wanna know about such basic things ....can anyone help me in finding the correct place where i can get the answer for this...where shud i post such basic doubts...

Hi, and welcome to LQ!

To answer your question about installing new packages, it depends on which distribution you're using. It might be a good idea to update your profile here to include that.

Well, I've never used Redhat myself, but I know it uses RPM for package installation. There's a command line tool called "rpm", and there may be a GUI frontend to it somewhere as well. Try looking round the RedHat forums here on LQ for more help.
