Question Here goes after 20 years

Hello everyone,
I used to use Unix based workstations over 20 years ago and thought I would try to delve into linux as an alternative to MS. I have successfully installed virtual pc on my laptop that runs Windows7 Home Premium, and douwnloaded the Ubuntu distribution. However, I don't seem to be able to download any updates or the 'additions' package. I have prolems with my vision, and was hoping to take advantage of the 'orca' assistive technology. Looks like I've got a long way to go!!
