Lightbulb hello .. relative newbie to linux ..

I was having issues with windows, so I took the plunge & used lubuntu .. tried ubuntu & mint .. lubuntu is best for my limited system ..

Sooo glad to find a forum where linux users can support each other in what is clearly a powerful (yet challenging -- esp. for newbies) operating system & command line.

My main challenge now is organizing a huge number of accumulated files, backing them up, de-duplicating them, revising their modified dates, removing illegal characters from the names, appending dates to the file or directory name itself, reading files from my floppies, & a few other things.

Once data organized, life can begin anew ...

Thanks & good luck to all ..

Wow! Floppies. They still work? Awesome! Have not used those myself but when i was a boy hanging out at dad's office they were around. I use to have the floppy drive but disconnected it because i got a cd burner and new hard drive so it was wasting ide cable slots. Lol

We use to just trade game images using lpt ports and laplink back then.

Welcome to the forum. I am sure you will find answers to many questions here.

Yes, USB floppy drive can be mounted on Linux with the right package.

Some of my old floppies work. They've been shelved for a long time.

Thanks to all who replied.

Hi EVL and welcome to LQ!

We're talking 5 1/4" or 8" right? None of them 3.5" diskettes as they were called

sounds like you'll be needing to learn. BASH scripting -> and BASH string manipulation and perhaps sed and awk for starters.

remember taking little bytes at a time so you do not byte off more then you can chew.

Scripting, strings, sed, and awk .. Yes, I think these are a good place to start.

stats & touch for date modifications, perhaps.

Taking little bites is definitely the way to go. It can be a challenge to
select a small enough bite !!
