hello middle aged linux user

Hello, I have owned a eeepc 701sd for 3 years, don't know what version
of linux is on it, only that I have owned it since new and this is the version
that came with it. I find it does everything I need.
One question, I am trying to upgrade firefox and it comes up with a window to choose an application, what application do I use, have to keep it simple as I am 55 and have no access to teenagers

If you open the file manager or just click on /home icon and navigate to the /etc directory, there will be a file named issue and/or a file named release which will tell you the distribution of Linux you are using. I think it is Xandros but you can check.

How are you trying to upgrade firefox? Are you going to their website?

Howdy vikingdrive. I am just a biker that owns a EEEPC 701SD and am a mod at eeepc forums, (site has been down for ages though).

Xandros which you are running is Debian Etch based and Xandros crippled it with the libraries it uses. Also GTK is too old in Xandros for Updating Firefox also. So. For Updating Firefox. I used to be able to point you to the EEEPC wiki which has a section for running a script to update to Firefox 3.0 in Xandros. Problem is the site is down.

So. The best I can show you is, (I have never done this), so if anything breaks. Not my fault and since I don't have access to eeepc forums. I can't tell you how to unbork what you did short of doing a F2 reinstall which will wipe all saved data and give you a pristine Xandros reinstall.

I left Xandros ages ago and run AntiX on my 701SD now. My latest How to which I made with my EEEPC 900, (I own one of those also). It is a step by step procedure on Installing Antix with screenshots.

I have also ran Semplice Linux and Puppeee Linux and Macpup 528 off of external pendrive on my 701SD and those distros worked just fine on my 701SD also. I know some of this may be over your head. But I am no spring chicken either with a GED education and I just decided I was not going to be outdone by any script kiddies.

thanks for the replies, I think I will get brave enough and have a go at installing a different version of linux

If wanting to install Linux outside of Xandros and keept it on internal SSD drive. Something I made also to run a Linux distro outside of internal SSD drive on eeepc

Go with the AntiX 11 version though. Another way I went back in 2009 was (this is a full install to external SD card)

back when I still had Xandros on that netbook. You can use it for AntiX 11 also.

Good luck with whatever distro (linux operating system) and install type you wish to go with.
