Welcome to LQ!

If you want to start off in the deep end, check out Gentoo, Slackware, and Debian. Information on almost all distributions can be found at www.distrowatch.com.

Books to read: the Linux Bible (find online), LFS (Linux From Scratch) will help you understand how a system is constructed. Another good one is the Slackbook, which you will have on download of the Slackware iso images. Other than that, use google.
