I installed Xubuntu on an a desktop I bought in 2001, it has a 1.2Ghz AMD Athlon 0.75Gb core.
It is a bit slow, but it is OK.
What I like very much about not only (X)Ubuntu but also other distro's that installed applications are updated too.

There are lighter distributions you can try, such as Zorin OS 9 Lite and Lubuntu, to name a couple.
