Good morning, everyone.

So, I'm a longtime computer geek, but have been looped into the world of Windows for far, far too long. A month ago, I installed Linux on my desktop, having been fed up to the hilt with Windows constantly crashing on it. Since then, I have been nothing short of delighted with what I have found, and am quite enamoured with the idea of learning all I can about the operating system and how to make the most use out of it.

By day, I'm a computer teacher and geek-of-all-trades at a high school, where I teach everything from how to diagnose and repair computers to graphic design, videography, animation and web design to brilliant and talented students. By night, I'm a mysterious and dynamic figure, around whom legendary tales have been woven. The stories of the mad artist, lover, poet, explorer, geek, and prankster, whirling through spacetime in bouts of laughter and chaos, twirling visions and creations around her fingertips echo through the collective consciousness of humankind. I'm also very modest. :)

Anyhow, I have a few questions about Linux that I'll be poking around with, but first, I'm going to lurk a bit, to see what I can learn.

Welcome to LQ!

If you want to learn Linux (which is actually the kernel),
you'd better get another distro ... Slackware or Debian.

Ubuntu doesn't even have the software installed to build a
kernel, or a module such as a wireless adapter's driver.

Hey, btw, we're international here...

Thank you. It's easy for me, which is what I need first... just to find my way around. Also, I managed to get my wireless card working on both my desktop and my laptop just fine, without having to install anything extra.
