Bali says, hallo world...

Hi there,

My name is actually Roland, I'm Swiss living in Bali for almost 8 years. For most subscriptions though I take our more unique company name. It safes a lot of typing and waiting for pages never turning up. High-speed access is still a cry in the wind and the ordinary telephone lines are even not worth calling speedy, if the connection to the ISP is coming up at all...

From OS :Pengy: I knew already quit a long time, but I was never dare to install one of those distributions on my box, as there were circulating so many horror stories about running this kind of OS.

It was about an year ago, when my wife, Ester (Roland + Ester = Resterland), who is the GM of our company, came up with the request of having a computer installed in our shop. Sure, no problem, but then I start thinking, how nice might it be to have a network set up with a centralized database.

So far the data where kept with MS Access. Security reasons brought me to MySQL as the one an only solution for my project. In the German edition of the MySQL for dummies I was told that concerning security rather running it on a Linux OS.

Half an year ago I bought a new computer. From my computer dealer, who is already a long term Linux user, I got the Mandrake 9.1 and some very helpful hints on setting it up.

To my surprise, it was really quite easy to install it on my box.. Even the LAN over Samba to my WiN98 box was up in a few days and I could start using MySQL with the front-end of MS Access.

Not everything went that smooth, that's why I'm here to increase my knowledge.
