Hey ppl!
Have been reading this forum fow awhile now and finally decided to register.
My level of familiarity with Linux is probably best described as 'intermediate'. First tried Linux in 1997, and seldom used it since then till 2005 - that's when I got really hooked.
I work as a sysadmin, which defines the way I use Linux. I can set up and configure iptables or samba in 10 minutes, but so far never attempted to burn a CD on Linux.
To give you a better picture of my preferences:
- I use Windows on my desktop, both home and work. I don't give a damn if someone thinks it's 'not cool'
- I prefer not to install X on production servers.
- I'm a security freak. Never use same password twice and never write them down.
- I have Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris running at home. I'm rather beginner with the latter two, but I like learning new systems.
I tried many distros - Red Hat/Fedora/Mandrake/CentOS, Suse, Slackware, Ubuntu, Knoppix/Slax/Backtrack to name the few. Each has pros and cons and selecting one really depends on particular needs. However, for my production servers I've been using and recommending Slackware, because it's simple, functional, secure out-of-the-box - comparing to other distros, and does not get on my way (some other distros really do). It's also stable and not demaniding to hardware resources.
That's about it for now
Cheers
