Another Linux novice
 

Hi all,

I've recently installed two different distros of Linux on two different systems: Red Hat 6.0 on one and Ubuntu on another. Thus far I like what I've seen. It's obviously very different from Windows!

So I'll have many questions as this journey continues, but it's my goal to get as far away from M$ as possible. I'm happy to be here and hope to learn much!

FYI: RHL6 is really really old and has not been supported for many years you should remove it. If you really mean fedora Core 6 then this is OK to keep. Red Hat and Fedora Core while related are not quite the same, please try and use the proper name. RHL6 was released back in 1999 which is why the suggestion to remove. A number of years ago Red Hat made a decision to become an enterprise only house instead of being one that supplied both freely available and purchased (support mostly) version and Fedora Core was 'born' as a result. With the 'birth' of Fedora core the version numbering started (all over again) at one (FC1).

A (very) short version linage:
Freely available: RHL6/6.1/6.2/7/7.1/7.2/8.0/9.0/FC1/2/3/4/5/6/7(soon)
Subscription version; RHEL/2.1/3/4/5(the newest release)
RHL == Red Hat Linux, FC == Fedora Core, RHEL == Red Hat Enterprise Linux


Yes, Linux is not Windows, but just like Windows one starts the learning process and getting used to working with Linux one step at a time. You did not know how to use all the features and appliations of Windows in a day or week, the same holds true for Linux. Just take the time and learn, ask questions when you need to and please read as much as you can. Over a period of time you will become used to running Linux and wonder why you did not try Linux years ago.

Yah the RHL6 was something I found in a book: "Linux Clearly Explained" by a UVA prof. It was published back in 1999.

I found the book, with the 6.0 disk, in a used bookshop for about 6$. The intention was to use it as a "learner," as I have several Pentium 3 and older "cast-off" systems from my job, so I can afford to experiment a bit.

My primary home computer still runs Windows XP, but the goal is to use the other systems to become more proficient with Linux and eventually migrate away from Microsoft.
