I've just joined this board and one of the main reasons is that my older computer's hard drive crashed and I had to replace it. The first problem I had was that the machine's BIOS can't recognize more than an 8G drive, and all I had to replace it with was a 30G drive. Once I realized that Windows was out, I tried an old RedHat install on it. Linux doesn't seem to be worried about what the BIOS thinks, and can see the entire drive, so naturally that's what I'm running there. My newer machine boots Win2K, two seperate Windows ME's, and the same old Linux that's now on the old box. (I'm a developer and need access to as many OS's as possible for testing software and cross-platform compatibility.)
Anyway, once I got the old box running, I discovered that Internet Connection Sharing works just fine through one of my ME installs, which amazed and delighted me at the same time since it's an old Packard Hell and has their strange hardware in it. I still can't get the sound card (which is also a modem, go figure) to work, but don't really care about that anyway right now. One of my first major projects now is to use the network and Samba to mount my Windows shares on the old Linux-only box, so I'll be doing a lot of reading and searching through here, but I know that there are LOTS of posts about Samba so unless I just can't find something I won't ask any tired old questions.
That's about the size of it, and if anybody bothers to read this, I'll probably be seeing you around from time to time.
and especially Tink, I looked for this forum and just didn't see it so I posted where it looked appropriate at the time. Got a lot on my mind and plate right now, so you'll have to overlook my eagerness for now. As an update, I got Samba working and a lot faster than I expected. Now I can copy (and move) a lot of files that are cluttering up the old hard drive on my Windows machine to where they should be. I look forward to talking to some of you guys, and I'm not one to ask a bunch of tired questions without reading and searching a lot first. It took a while before the site would accept my membership link, but I made it and am glad to be here with all of you knowledgeable people just in case.
Linux has been one of the OS's that I've been fascinated with since I was first able to run it, and it actually saved me a lot of data that Windows would have just trashed and given up on. As a matter of fact, this is WinME that I'm posting from (this machine is faster anyway), and I would have lost this entire partition had it not been for Linux. There's always a trade-off somewhere between the two, like having nothing but Winmodems that I can't use with Linux, so it's nice to have the option to use one or the other. Programming is one of my hobbies, and I also earn a little cash from it from time to time. Linux makes programming almost a must for people like me, and it keeps me in practice so I use it a lot more than Windows for that kind of thing. Glad to be in a community that will give back when I need it, and I'll be looking for questions that I can answer as well.
