... a new convert ...
Hello there!
Well, finally, after 20+ years of using MS Windows, I have been tempted by a dutch book to leave my comfort zone. I have just bought a new PC, and it is going to be Linux & open source only. People warn me that it will be tough to get all the hardware working, but I am ready for the challenge. Long time ago I started my career as a mainframe programmer (good old Cobol & S360 Assembler),and though I am by no means considered a techie anymore, I still get my kicks out of taming the iron :). I guess I will need some help of y'all in the weekss to come. I'm looking forward to the fun & frustration! |
Welcome to LQ !
We are happy and ready to help you ! I bet you will found more fun than frustration. You tell me later, ok ? Try to start with a friendly distro like the last Ubuntu or openSuSE. Another hint is to use the last available version. Things change too fast in linux world. A distro with 6 months is old, and with one year it is obsolete. Fedora it is a good distro, it is my personal choice, but I would not recommend it to beginners. It has issues with playing multimedia files that are not open formats.... I am sure here you will find answers for your questions. Just ask ! best regards from LQ ! |
