A little confused older fart , looking to run windows app with Linux
 

Got to this point trying to find a way to get CHKDSK to run on my computer to clean up the years of neglect. Since MS doesn't want to give anything away, like a simple OS that would fit on a flash drive, I thought it a good time to venture into this thing called Linux.

Been interesting, but a little confusing. Now I need to see if I can find something in Linus that will run an .exe program. Appreciate any help you might have.

Welcome to the forums Tim!

You probably know this already, but it's worth repeating: Linux Is Not Windows! Windows is your best choice for Windows applications, Mac is your best choice for Mac apps, and Linux is your best choice for thousands of wonderful Linux apps!

That being said, there is a software called WINE (Wine Is Not an Emulator) that allows you to run some Windows .exe programs in Linux. You can read all about it at http://winehq.org and they even have a searchable "App DB" so you can see how well a particular app is supported. :)

Which OS do you have installed?
If you want to run it on linux, fsck is the chkdsk equivalent.

CHKDSK is an application to check the file-system for errors and eventually fix them. It is not an app to clean your computer from cruft. But the best way to get a clean Windows is simply to do a fresh install, at least better than those "cleaning" apps.

Thank you for the response - I did come across the fsck in my
searches yesterday - but a question this brings to my mind is -
will fsck work on a windows base OS? Almost was going to try that.
I need to run the chkdsk because I am getting a number of broken
lines that need to be fixed or deleted.

If I could find the disk. It has been about 6 years ago that I bought this computer and close to 10 moves from house to house. It may be somewhere, just don't know where that might be. Not a "Big" fan of MS any way, so thought this would be a good time to look into Linux. Thanks for the reply
