2 day old newB here
 

Hi All

I just installed linux 2 days ago.. MMM slick (i hate winblows). I have been a mac user for many many years. Once apple released OSX i became more interested in Unix based systems and realized I could build my own machine for much less than what the other co. ask for. So now I have my Linux RedHat 9.0 up and running. woohoo. So far I really like how it runs. It's reminds of the reasons i liked apple's OS, just so much more elegant the that bill guys OS. I'm sure I'll be posting thousands of questions here so i thought I'd introduce myself:o

Not sure if you know, but you can install linux on PPC hardware too....dual boot OSX and linux :)

I think you can get Mandrake, debian, gentoo and perhaps a few others on there too.

are gentoo the ones that worked on winex? i've heard a little bit about it but not much as this is a whole new world to me. can't even get my wan card to werk =(

Slackware will run on ppc also(Splack):D

I'm not sure what any of the differences are in these distros but what are people preferences? what might you all suggest for someone not coming from a programming background but music, graphics and video? i understand that all the distros will pretty much run the same software, just curious of what people prefer.

Well, for a beginer you may want to use Redhat or Mandy, then as you become more fluent with how linux works you will want to switch to a distro that offers you more control like slack, gentoo, or my favorite: Archlinux

The ease of use of RH and Mandy come at the price of less configurability..(is that a real word?)

Anyways, get your feet wet with an easy one, then check out the rest. Big harddrives are so cheap these days you can install 3,4,5, or more distros on the same box, then pick your fave

ok cool.. that's the kind of advice i needed.. i installed mandrake and downloaded a couple of other distros. hehe that's so true about installing 3,4,5 distros.. (something impossible in the rest of the os world).

oh btw i was once a candian as well. london ontario and ottowa!

turnkey sounds really interesting, i am sure linux is very capable of handling auio processing with ease. it's one of the main reasons i built this new cpu as my mac became too slow for handling it all. not being a billy fan i decided i wanted to use linux more than winblows (wish i could just delete that virus on my hda1). thanks for the advice.
