I went through the utility, with seemingly no problems, and now x won't even start because of a "no screens found" error. What the fuck? What did I do wrong?

What distro you using? What video card? What does the "Screen" section of XF86Config-4 say?

the command doesn't run quite correctly, at least on debian, I always rename the file to XF86Config-4, I don't know why, but the xf86config writes XF86Config, and the X needs XF86Config-4, so if you have and old XF86Config-4, you have to delete it first.
