Young Slackware newbie trying to configure wireless on an IBM T30 lappy
Title pretty much says it all. I'm pretty much a total newbie, and looking for some serious help/education in the whole world of wireless Lans and Linux. Basically, I know I need to compile drivers.. or something... heh. Help?
By the way, I have a built in Wi-Fi card, an Aries2-1.00 (NL-5354MP) I think. Please help me out, I really have no idea what I'm doing. I have not really done anything yet, I've attempted to read the iwconfig mannages, and only seriously confused myself. I'm slowly reading through the hp.com Linux related wireless docs (can't provide link due to lack of posts =|) but you probably know what I'm talking about... Trying to educate myself in this area.. but.. Basically, I'm looking for a brief simple explanation of what exactly I need to do to configure this so I can connect to the wireless network set up by my father for all the Windows boxes all over the house. Even after I get this configured I'm going to keep reading up on this subject so hopefully I can do it myself next time ;) Thanks, seriously, for at least checking out my thread. |
lspci will list the devices on the PCI bus and tell you more about the WiFi card. lspci -v will provide more detail if needed.
Once you know which chipset the adapter uses, you can get the right driver. Once the driver is installed, it must be loaded. Then, configure the card with iwconfig. Finally, use dhcpcd to pull an IP. |
Welcome to LQ!
There is another LQ member with the nick of Alien Bob who has a wiki and a nice repository of Slackpackages and SlackBuild scripts. In that wiki are articles on wireless for Slackware. In my experience, you can copy and paste most all of his information and get cards working. If you have any problem, he is more than willing to help, and gives access information. I bought a card from BestBuy (oxymoron) and questioned the Geek Squad (oxymoron). They could not tell me what chipset it used, though they thought it used the Atheros chipset. Alien Bob's ndiswrapper tute worked just fine for that card -- never a problem. Like your sig -- now let's see you prove that African distro is a bunch of baloney, as you master Slack!!! |

@Bruce Hill: Thanks, I'll check that out, and edit this post if I figure it out using those docs. I'm still just as confused as ever really... I think /me needs to do some research on WLANs ;) Thanks =D |
It's an Atheros Communications card ... use Alien Bob's madwifi instructions. They work great!
