WLAN-LINUX Hell :(

Okay, I've been trying hardcore to try to figure this sucker out, and I've even installed a few different builds (mandrake/gentoo/fedora)

Right now, I am running Mandrake 10.1 Community

- Linux source directory [/usr/src/linux]:
The config script will attempt to automagically find your kernel
source directory. If found, the kernel source source directory
will be presented as the default selection. If the default
selection is wrong, you may correct it here.

This is the part thats killing me

Whenever I try to make config on that, it shoots back out at me "2.6xxxx is incomplete or missing!"

You will then be asked for the location of the kernel source code Linux source directory [/usr/src/linux-2.6.5-1.358]: /usr/src/linux-2.6.6-1.435.2.3/

Ahhhhhhh

Damn it, I tried downloading a 2.4xxx Kernel version as someone said that wouldn't bark as much, and it did install as I see it on "grub"?

This is fun stuff installing this.

Make sure you have your distrobution's kernel source installed. To check go to your RPM packager and see if it's installed. If not install it and that should fix your problem.

fintheman 09-28-2004 11:29 PM

Okay, I went ahead and tried to double check that, and I installed a 2.6xx kernel. Still nothing in the /usr/src folder :(

Neutron1998 09-28-2004 11:30 PM

Which distro do you have? I have Mandrake 10.1 As soon as I installed the kernel source I had the /usr/src/linux folder. Actually the linux folder is a link to the kernel source files.

Make sure that source is installed.

fintheman 09-28-2004 11:30 PM

I tried the "make config" again on WLAN, and I got Linux source directory build is incomplete or missing

So the question is, if I did install it, where the hell do I point the make config program too (the hell is to myself, not you) I've been at this for a week now.

fintheman 09-28-2004 11:32 PM

Weird, I'm pretty sure I installed the kernel source unless I'm doing something wrong with the RPM program. I went RPMDRAKE 10.1 and found a 2.6x kernel and read it to make sure it was the full thing (not experimental) or whatever, and "installed it"

Should I try restarting the system?

fintheman 09-28-2004 11:34 PM

Okay, restarted and saw the new kernel in grub, so I booted to that......

lets see.....

fintheman 09-28-2004 11:35 PM

Yea, nothing in that folder still (while in root or the user mode, thats funky)

Maybe you can point me to something to make sure I'm downloading the exact thing that I need to be downloadiing.

fintheman 09-28-2004 11:37 PM

whoops, 10.1

Neutron1998 09-28-2004 11:38 PM

What is in your /usr/src directory right now?

fintheman 09-28-2004 11:41 PM

right now - a linus-2.6.8.tar.bz2 I downloaded there from linuxhq, I haven't touched that yet though, and a RPM folder

fintheman 09-28-2004 11:56 PM

Okay, I'm giving something a shot, I think I found what my answer is

Its not that the /usr/src/ is the kernel itself, but it is the kernel's source files. So, in order for it to work, I need to search for the install the kernel-source.blah.rpm

I am giving this a shot now, found it on the rpmdrake 10.1

It had me put in almost every CD to do this.

Used this thread as I found as a source

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...002/10/4/33849

Hopefully this will help someone else who has the same question when it comes. And I could of used that file I installed into the directory, but I'll skip on that,

fintheman 09-29-2004 12:19 AM

wlanctl-ng: No Such Device

holy crap!

did some research, now I gotta learn how/what a NDISWRAPPER is....

Neutron1998 09-29-2004 12:24 AM

Which wlan drivers are you using? I would suggest going to www.linux-wlan.org and getting the pre20 driver. I have Mandrake 10.1 and it worked wonderfully for my Netgear MA111.

fintheman 09-29-2004 01:22 PM

I used the pre22

Should I backtrack to the pre20?
