Wireless/WEP on IBM Thinkpad T40

Hello All !

I've got a Thinkpad T40 and am connecting fine to my Wireless Router via a ethernet cable, but obviously want to take advantage of the Thinkpads built in Wireless.

I have a fresh installation of Slackware, running the 2.4.26 kernel.

I've read a lot of topics on this so far, but am obviously lacking the ability (and skill, and knowledge... etc, etc) to get this working.

I was referred to this project at Sourceforge: http://ipw2100.sourceforge.net
I'm a little baffled on what to actually install, as the requirements as to what kernel for what 802.11a/b/g is a bit cryptic.

Any help would be ji-normously appreciated.
Thanks !

Hi Ultraman,

I think you may need to be running a 2.6 version kernel for centrino to operate. In any case, your wireless setup will e far happier on this kernel version and you will encounter fewer problems. Linux wireless is still in its infancy and generally needs the latest and greatest to help it run.

Hey Snecklifter !

I've upgraded to 2.6.9, and still no wireless.
Actually, I didn't maintain my .config from the kernel switch, and it can't even find my network card... but, that's a different thread

Once I'm on a stable 2.6.x version, should it automatically recognize that I'm trying to connect wirelessly ?

Any configs that I need to tweak / run ?
Thank you very much for your help on this !

Hey ultraman,

Nice one on upgrading. I'm afraid it wont automatically detect your centrino chip - that depends on your distro and at the moment only new editions of Mandrake and Suse are running it straight out of the box. With regards to how you proceed now, its really just a matter of following the steps over at http://ipw2100.sourceforge.net and make sure you have got wireless tools installed as well. This you can get from http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_...nux/Tools.html
See how you go.
Regards
Chris

Hey Snecklifter !

I ran into a slew of problems getting X to start, and a bunch of other things were broken with the new kernel (should have done make old-config... live and learn ...).... then, when I went to work the next day, my colleague had a brand new copy of SuSE on his desk.

Sooooo.... I installed SuSE on my laptop (which I reeeally wanted wireless), and kept Slack on my desktop, which is plugged in via Ethernet.
SuSE detected the wireless immediately, and I didn't even need to do any minor configs or anything.... go figure.

Thank you very much for your help on this, as I now know exactly what to do if I love to hate SuSE and want to stick to Slack

Thanks again snecklifter !

Hey Ultraman,

Good to hear. I have toyed briefly with Suse but still sticking with Mandrake because I'm waiting to see what the official 10.1 release brings. I'm nowhere near good enough to go slack yet. Get well Patrick!

Regards
Chris
