Unhappy Wireless Troubles (belkin 54g pci card on ubuntu)

I just recently installed ubuntu on my home machine. I have used other distros before (red hat and fedora) but im still fairly new to linux. Right after the ubuntu installation, i burned ndiswrapper and ndiswrapper-utils to a disc and installed them on my machine. Everything was running smoothly, and i downloaded the bcmwl5a.inf dell driver that is supposed to be compatible with my card (according to the wiki on the ndiswrapper sf page) and successfully added it to ndiswrapper. I configured /etc/network/interfaces to my wlan settings. ndiswrapper is up and running, but my card is not doing anything. when i hit:

ndiswrapper -l

in the console it says:

Installed ndis drivers:
bcmwl5a driver present, hardware present

i have the wlan0 activated and configured as i mentioned above, but my card is not responding... (no internet connection, no lights flashing on the chip) i really have no idea what is wrong... the software looks like it is recognising the card (it says hardware present) but its not doing anything any help would be greatly appreciated

card info: Belkin Wireless 54g PCI Card - model number: F5D7000 (rev. 3) chipset: Broadcom BCM4306

note: i am running a dual boot of windows xp and ubuntu. I have not removed the wireless card from my system since i installed ubuntu... i don't know if that matters because if i hit lspci it shows up... thanks for reading

Did you modprobe ndiswrapper into the kernel like this:
Code:
modprobe ndiswrapper

You get that even after you type "modprobe ndiswrapper" then "iwconfig"?

nope... *feels stupid*
Code:
lo	no wireless extensions.

eth0	no wireless extensions.

sit0	no wireless extensions.

wlan0	IEEE 802.11g ESSID:off/any
	Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00
	Bit Rate:54 Mb/s m Tx-Power:25 dBm
	RTS thr:2347 B Fragment thr:2346 B
	Encryption key:off
	Power Management:off
Link Quality:100/100 Signal level:-10 dBm Noise level:-256 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
	Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
just fyi i need to set this up for channel 6, no encryption, and the ESSID is WLAN. It should be compatible with my belkin 802.11b router... i really have no idea whats going on... this was a pain in windows, but so much easier =P thanks for all the help provided so far

After you've ran modprobe ndiswrapper, try running "iwconfig wlan0 essid WLAN" then "dhcpcd wlan0 up".
That should get you on the net.

thanks for all your help so far calcon! this is starting to come together... when i run 'iwconfig wlan0 essid WLAN' it acts like its working but nothing changes. however when i do a 'iwconfig wlan0 channel x' the frequency changes... no idea whats wrong here. at 'iwconfig' dhcpcd isn't a recognised command... any idea what software i need? thanks again for all your help!

Do you mean "iwconfig dhcpcd...." isn't a registered command or "dhcpcd ...." isn't a registered command?

neither works... now that i see itst iwconfig dhcpcd... it kind of works... it doesn't recognise anything beyond the dhcpcd but thats probably because when i hit 'iwconfig dhcpcd' it says
dhcpcd no such device
do i need to set wlan0 as a dhcpcd or something? o.o

try "ifconfig wlan0 up"

*Note: The correct command that I was trying to get you to do before was just "dhcpcd wlan0 up" not anything else (after the other ones.)

Here's all the commands that I wanted you to do before:
Code:
modprobe ndiswrapper
iwconfig wlan0 essid WLAN
dhcpcd wlan0 up
Or
Here's all the commands to try now:
Code:
modprobe ndiswrapper
iwconfig wlan0 essid WLAN
ifconfig wlan0 up

dhcpcd doesn't work for some reason... maybe because of our distribution difference. i tried the second list of commands and they all executed successfully... i boot firefox and it wont load the page... is there something im missing

btw: do you have aim or msn? it would be a lot easier on an im

Can you ping computers on your wlan? (or your router)
("ping ipofanothercomp" for instance "ping 192.168.2.2")
