wireless-tools not connecting to Apple Airport

I use wireless-tools to succesfully connect to the internet at my apartment, but at my folk's house I'm not able to connect to the airport extreme.

normally, I just do this
Code:
iwconfig ath0 essid "foo" (sometimes)
ifconfig ath0 up
dhcpcd ath0
...and I'm connected

Those commands aren't letting me connect to airport, and I've even made sure to set the essid to match airport's ("Apple Network 0c8ecd").

If anyone who knows what I'm doing wrong here would tell me what I'm missing, that would be great.
