Wireless problems RHEL 5.4 (RedHat) - wireless card not connecting

Dear colleagues,

I recently installed RHEL 5.4 (I know, it's really a server OS) on an older DELL Laptop, Latitude D600.

The wired Ethernet port "eth0" works fine, but I cannot get the wireless interface "eth1" to work.

The command lspci reveals that "eth1" has a Broadcom BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller.
Running dmesg shows some errors, as follows:
'bcm43xx: ignoring additional 802.11a core
bcm43xx: core_up for active 802.11 core failed (-2)'

I also checked the /lib/firmware directory is empty.

I suspect a driver or kernel module error, but I am stuck for new ideas.I tried configuring "eth1" using the iwconfig command, but to no avail.

Grateful for any advice or new pointers.

Ionut

5.4 might be a bit TOO old for it
also why not the CURRENT version of 5 -- 5.8 ?

dose RHEL6.2 ( also not free) work it is 5 years newer than the older 5 series

rhel5 came out in 2007 so any newer hardware might NOT be supported

as with any RHEL install you are paying a large amount of cash every year
-- the required 1 yeas std Desktop support contract is $299 USD per year ( server is $799)
so you might want to take advantage of all the perks that the required license gets you
like the red hat knowlagebase
https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/search
or read the red hat documents
https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/...erprise_Linux/
the older 5 are in the middle of the page
