Thumbs up Helpful, but scattered thread

@knufdl First-timer here.

I'm using 64-bit Kali and Mint 17, and building ns-aqua and aqua3d on both has been a real whack-the-mole task.
After wrestling with 7-8 different versions of gcc/g++ in all, I now know that building on i386 is required (or just recommended?), so your .deb files have been invaluable.
Still, I've had to resolve 32-bit dependencies by installing libpcap:i386, libwxgtk2.8-0:i386, and freeglut3:i386.

Two mutually related questions:
1. Any prebuilt 64-bit executables/packages for ns-aqua and aqua3d? It may sound pedantic, but resorting to 32-bit apps on a 64-bit machine has always left me uneasy.
2. You mentioned that 64-bit installs (if they're even possible) will have reduced functionality (or something to that effect) as these are targeted towards 32-bit architectures. Any specific drawbacks that come to mind?

Please consider making a sticky for installation instructions and alternatives for x86_64 out of the scattered nuggets in this thread so you can redirect noobs like me to it straightaway.

Thanks a lot!

#251, @RevHardt.

1. Some many application are for 32bits only. No drawbacks.
Unless you are using dedicated 64bits applications : Use a 32bits OS.

2. Reduced funtionality : Not all ns2 simulations will work.
And again : Use a 32bits OS.

First : Please have a look at post #46 here ...
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...264/page4.html
→ → is about the 64bits (x86_64 / amd64) Ubuntu 12.04 .

If you have the best version for most ns2, i.e. 32bits (i686),
then please use {gcc41-compat "1204" / g++41-compat},
post #18 here http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...022/page2.html

.. Then the build command is :
$ export CC=gcc41 CXX=g++41 && ./install

sir
i want to use ns-2.34 in ubuntu 12.04 so, i need gcc 4.1.
i have read your several posts in which you suggested to install gcc & g++. Therefore installed
gcc41-compat*1210 //https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B7S255p3kFXNTlNURldUenRyb3c/edit?pli=1
g++41-compat //https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B7S255p3kFXNODIyODhhNDctZTRhMy00MDk4LWEzZDAtMThjMjljN2M2MGU4/edit?pli=1
when i used command
shipra@ubuntu:~/Desktop/ns-allinone-2.34$ ns-allinone-2.34/ && export CC=gcc41 CXX=g++41 && ./install
bash: ns-allinone-2.34/: No such file or directory

After this i tried
shipra@ubuntu:~/Desktop/ns-allinone-2.34$ ./install
it gives following errors.

Build tcl8.4.18
