Normally I don't help with homework, but given this situation I'll put in my two bits.
#1 - Hardware support! Most especially in laptops, where wireless networking is most beneficial.
#2 - Linux is not mainstream. Like yourself, many people don't know where to turn for help, and try to find advice online when things don't work.

wireless Networking in Linux
Setting up wireless with linux needs following things:
1) The Transmitting and reciving cards supported with antennas.
2) The application/setup wizards which helps in configuring IP addresses and securities.
3) For less power, modem type of devices will be helpfull
As you are 12 th standard I don't think your assignment will be much complicated than assembling the ready made devices. May be configuring some times tricky. Once you start you can post more specifi questions

Hmm have you checked out wireless free-nets
check out
http://www.e3.com.au/
and
http://www.wafreenet.org/
these are distinctly Western Australian sites
but might help with your assignment
plenty of food for thought
not necessarily Linux info though
