Wireless lan connected but no internet
Hi,
This is regarding my HP Pavilion ze2000 laptop with a built-in Broadcom 4318 (802.11b/g) wireless adapter. I finally got ndiswrapper installed correctly, and the bcmwl5a.inf driver loaded successfully. However, I still can't seem to get online using the wireless card. I believe I have set everything correctly using iwconfig, and the wireless card (wlan0) does successfully get an IP address from my router when I call dhclient wlan0. I turned off WEP on the router thinking that was the problem but it was not. Everything seems to be working properly except that I can't for the life of me get any internet connection (Firefox times out, doing a ping or traceroute fails). I'm getting desperate to get this wireless network working, as otherwise I'll be forced to use Windows XP a lot on this laptop -- which I'd like to avoid. Any ideas? Anything in particular I should try doing? If it helps, here is the output of ifconfig, iwconfig, route, dhclient: Code:

I assume the wireless works in Windows? Can you log in to the router's config page? One time, I accidentally set my own MAC address to be filtered, and I could not get internet after that....

Yes, the wireless internet works fine in Windows. I too was thinking this problem might have something to do with the router settings, but haven't found anything wrong in there. In fact, my router even detects and shows the MAC address of my laptop's wireless network card when I'm trying to use it in Linux. I also tried adding my wireless card's MAC address into the "always allow" table of the MAC filter on my router. But regardless of all this, I still cannot connect to the internet using the wireless network. Any other ideas? Thanks, |
ok i went out and bought a wireless router and nic card both linksys but that doesnt matter any. In windows (sorry people) i followed the instructions on cd the local lan worked fine but i couldnt get onto the net but all the lights were lit on it. I spent a few hours going through documentation at their site. the reason it took so long is i had to continously work between the router and internet meaning i had to keep switch cat6 between the router and my laptop. then finally i got to a step where it said to change the router address to 192.168.2.1 restarted pc then boom i was on the net.
I have DSL it comes out the jack in to a modem to the router. originally the router was set at 192.168.1.1 and it routed to gateway 192.168.1.1 which was also the IP of the modem Before PC-192.168.1.100 Router-192.168.1.1 modem-192.168.1.1 Internet gateway-192.168.1.1 (IP address conflict where do i route, to myself or modem?) After PC-192.168.2.100 Router-192.168.2.1 modem-192.168.1.1 Internet Gateway -192.168.1.1 I'm no networking genious but if i had thought about it instead of getting all pissed off i would have figured it out instead of wasting valuable time and i could of got to bed sooner. I dont know if will help any, but its all i got to offer. |

I habe suse 9.3 on an e-machine m6810 using the BCM4306 rev 4.4 mini-pci nic to a usr5450 (AP) -> usr8200 (dhcp) with WPA-PSK. I had to use the nidis wrapper for the inf file then I used wpa_supplicant w/ wpa_supplicant.conf and I use wpa_passphrase to generate my wpa key to hex. All in all it works great, (well it did), untikl I turned on the lappy this AM and I couldn't get to the internet :( I can ping, and log onto the AP and router w/in my own network but I can not get anthing outside, beyond the router. If I plug in my eth0 cable I can use the internet fine and my routes don't change and the dhcp server is the same as it is for the wi-fi. Tips, tricks, and treats welcome. Aaron Ps if anyone needs help with there bcm43xx or bcm4300 series nic let me know. Ash |

Good News... I was able to solve my wireless network problems (with the help of a fellow Linux user)! I'm a bit embarrased to say that after all of that the cause of the problem was simply that the firewall was blocking wlan0 as an internet device. All I had to do was go into the firewall settings and configure wlan0 as an internet device (unblocking it). Now my Broadcom 4318 wireless adapter is working perfectly, and I am enjoying the new freedom from ethernet cables. :D But it's always the simple things I overlook... :rolleyes: Thanks, |
