Wireless Internet/Wired issue on Fedora 8 on an intel dual core Desktop

Recently installed fedora 8 on my machine to get off from windows but I was unable to get internet working. Both wirelesss and wired ethernet cards are detected, wired gets ip assigned to it and all but internet does not function. In terms of the wireless, it even fails to connect to it. I have security for the wireless turned off. Printing out some of the info that the system gives me:

a lot of stuff but hopefully gives sufficient info to help u guys give me an answer. Also when trying to up any devices i get a SIOCSIFFLAGS: invalid argument error.

Are you sure eth0 is getting an IP address? When you ran this, it didn't have one.
Quote:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:76A:9F:56

Base address:0x30c0 Memory:e0300000-e0320000
The IP address shows up in the second line.

This is your eth0 card.

Would open a konsole and run as root 'lsmod' and cut and paste the results? I would like to know if there is a driver loaded for the hard wired ethernet. I'm guessing by the error message you get when you 'ifconfig eth0 up' that either the wrong driver, or no driver is loaded.

I'm also guessing you have a router. Would you post the make model etc. We may need to know later.

Usually wired ethernet is easy enough to get working. We can work on the wireless stuff later.

first of all, thnx for replying man.

yeah actually the ip not showing is my bad coz I had disconnected the cable when i submited the info. WHat shows is this

my initial idea was that the drivers are not working, because the ethernet device i have is an integrated one for my motherboard Intel DG965ss. It comes with its drivers for both audio and ethernet but since its an intel mobo it comes with windows, not linux drivers. Is there a way to get the specific drivers i need and run them on fedora? If so please let me know. Otherwise would I need to get a separate card like RealTek or something? Hopefully not.

Also my network manager aint showing and im a bit of a noob at linux , I forgot how its done I used to know.

as for modem, my isp removes all the tagging that comes on the devices but i can tell u its a 4 point dsl /router with access point for wireless, black color, flat. ANd this shows under product info for it:

Can you connect to the router or ping it? Try 192.168.1.1 or whatever the setup page is.

If you can connect or ping, I'd restart the modem/router by unplugging it for a few seconds.

Assigning an IP, but not getting Internet sounds like a router / firewall problem to me.

The wireless may be a different story though.

You have a driver loaded for the eth0 interface.

This is it.

Here is a link that describes how to configure an IP address,

http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/a...ra-core-fedora

but since you have one, I would bet the interface is up, and you go the address from the routers DHCP server.

So, try the ping and let us know. I see you have a lot of modules for a firewall running. If you can't ping the router, then I would bet the firewall is blocking you. It may need some configuring.

I think it was a question of compatibility with available drivers added to the firewall of the router as you mentioned. But I went with what seemed a more practical solution. I installed Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron and from the moment install was done, both ethernet and wireless cards I got worked plus sound as well from my integrated board. Thanks to both of you for the help :P

Glad you now have a working system.

Just to clarify ( for you ) some things. The firewall I was talking about was the one running in FC8, not the one in your router. If you have a look in the output from lsmod, you will see modules loaded, like these;

iptable_filter 6465 1
ip_tables 14213 1 iptable_filter
This is a firewall in FC8. At least for eth0 you had a driver loaded. That is why we asked for the ping, to see if you could reach your router.

Linux takes some time to learn about, just like any operating system. Chalk it up to a learning experience, but I'm sure we could have got FC8 working.

I use Xubuntu on an old laptop as a test device. It is a good distro as well. Have fun....

yeah I was more pressed for time for something I had to test for college. But Yeah fedora seems like a good one as well, just isn't as automated as ubuntu for someone who is a total noob like me. Thanks for the input on the firewall, ill give it a look probably test fedora on a laptop.
