Wireless connection with Linux.,
 

Hi.. it's a newbie question about wireless connections.

I have 2 PCs (both with a wireless card), both with Linux, and one of them with a internet connection. I want to make a wireless network, between this 2 computers and to share the internet.

1) I need an "access point" to make a WAN between both PCs?

2) Having a WAN, i can configure the computer with the internet connection has a Gateway of the other, so, why some people say that i must to buy a router?

I will give you my best answer. I don't know if I'm entirely right but I think that you need a router. The router will split the internet connection so that both pcs can use it. If you have high speed internet then the modem must be hooked up to the router in order to have a wireless internet on multiple computers.

you should be able to do this without an access point or router, first, you must get a working ad-hoc connection between them, have you done this?

Not yet, i'm buying the new cards and i want to know if i must or not to buy the access point...

hrm, I'm a newb, but one thing that you should be able to do, have the landline come from your modem to one of the computers, whichever *hopefully* has a hard line, and wireless.. then set up an ad hoc, and allow sharing to go on from the primary computer.. it should work.. how, exactly, to do this is linux, I have no clue, but I tried to be helpful.. ;)

what i did to get such a wireless network up was

1) get PCI wireless cards that are known to work under linux; to do this, i got a pair of netgear MA311's

2) make sure the drivers for the wireless cards work (i.e. the interfaces come up under ifconfig and iwconfig)

2) compile and install hostap-0.4 on the computer that will do the routing

3) establish a dhcp connection between the 2 computers; this requires some basic knowledge of setting up subnets and stuff; i can post more info if you need it

4) make sure the default gateway of the remote computer is set to the IP of the routing computer

and BANG you have wireless.
