Wireless connection from a netbook
 

Hello All,

first time putting on a question. I have an Acer netbook with Mint linux, Windows XP, Ubuntu Remax, I can only connect wirelessly with Windows. Can some help me get wireless to work on a netbook. I would like to get rid of windows. I am currently in Finland and the network stick only works with windows so I am stuck. I will be heading back to the states soon. But I would like to convert the netbook to linux and if that works I will convert my Dell Inspiron E1705 to linus. Please help

You would need to supply some more information as you mentioned a network stick I am wondering why you are not using the built-in wireless, unless you are referring to wireless broadband, which most current distributions should support out of the box and some even have "wizards" so that you just need to supply your providers details and the connection is set automatically.

In my general experience with Huawei modems they are easier to set up in Linux than they are in Windows.

If you do not encounter a wizard in the network manager then it is probably easiest to use a search engine to find the appropriate settings for your provider and enter them manually. Not very difficult. If you are talking about a wireless network stick then the approach may be entirely different, but you will find with some persistence, that most things can be made to work satisfactorily under Linux and it is improving all the time.

For USB devices, run "lsusb" to obtain device information. For other devices, try "lspci" and "lspci -n". Post the relevant information. Also post which kernel versions you are using: "uname -r"

Please include other relevant information. Such as, if this is a USB wireless modem, what router, modem & service you have. Or if this is a cellular data modem, etc.
