I'm looking for a good wireless pcmcia card to use for linux. I'd like something that I could use an external antenna with, I'm pretty new to wireless networking , any help is appreciated. Just looking for recommendations right now, thanks. I currently have a dwl-g650, and I havn't gotten it to work in linux yet, but I'm sure I can, I'm just looking for something that has alot more range though.
Not sure about those with an external antena, but if you check out the HCL on this site, along with the supported hardware list from wireless wrapper tools like ndiswrapper and madwifi, you'll get a good overview of the cards available for Linux and configuration instructions, and then be able to make judgement based on what you get through your local store on online store.
I have a US ROBOTICS MAXG and works perfect and supports WPA and was online is a hour with WPA encryption and works flawless and works also on full speed 54MBITS blazing fast, and no problems with the driver from the acer site.
The madwifi drivers for the Atheros-based chipsets/cards are working very well. Additionally, they have *excellent* slackware support through the work of alien_/Eric Hameleers at www.slackware.com/~alien/ - all you need for access+WPA encryption etc etc.
I'm looking for a good card in combination with an external antenna (home made or store bought) that can get me alot of range, as well as being well supported by linux.
Well alot of cards can be modified to use an external antenna. I have a Netgear 802.11b PCMCIA card (Model MA401R) that I picked up off ebay for $10. Its supported by the linux-wlan-ng drivers. When I was looking into external antennas for it awhile back I came across this page: http://www.nodomainname.co.uk/ma401/ma401.htm
You probably could use that guide and adapt it to other cards if you were carefull with them.
The only other card that I have had any real experience with is the Version 3 WPC11 (802.11b) Linksys card that is also supported by the linux-wlan-ng drivers.
