wireless card modules not loaded if eth0 not connected

Hopefully this is the correct forum for this question.

If my ethernet card on eth0 is not activated/connected, then none of my wireless card modules are loaded when I insert them into the pcmcia slot.

But once I activate eth0, suddenly the modules for my wireless card are loaded, and my wireless card on eth1 is recognized.

This happens for both my netgear wg511 and my orinoco gold card.

Note: I never had this problem until I started trying to install the prism54 drivers to get my netgear wg511 card working. During this process, I've installed the prism54 drivers, module-init-tools and wireless-tools.27.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? How does the status of eth0 affect the loading of modules for a wireless card? Is there some configuration file that I need to edit?
